Harry Luther Hess

Harry Luther Hess, beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 12th at 1:47 a.m. while under compassionate Hospice care after a courageous battle with cancer. Born to Luther Frank Hess and Margaret Lucy Gordon, Harry grew up with a quick wit and a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life.

Harry was the proud father of his son, Bryan Luther Hess, and his daughter, Dr. Susan Hess Lawson, both of whom were the greatest sources of pride in his life. He will be deeply missed by his grandchildren, who brought him immense joy, as well as his many nephews.

Professionally, Harry spent many years as the Food and Beverage Manager for the Ebro Greyhound Park Lounge and Concessions Department, where he was known for his sharp memory and ability to make everyone—from coworkers to patrons—feel welcome. His presence in the local racing community was unmistakable.

A man of many passions, Harry was an avid dog‑racing gambler, a masterful pool player, and a lover of golf, tennis, and the perfect cigar. He approached each hobby with the same enthusiasm he brought to life: competitive spirit, humor, and an appreciation for good company. Those who knew him will remember his easy laugh and his knack for storytelling.

Harry’s legacy lives on in the family who loved him, the friends who shared countless games and conversations with him, and the community that felt his presence for decades. He will be remembered for his unmistakable charm that made him unforgettable.
